Southern Methodist University (commonly referred to as SMU) is an NFCAA accredited university in Dallas, Texas and a member of the American Athletic Conference. Founded in 1911 by the South Central chapter of the United Methodist Church. SMU's athletic teams, the Cyclones, compete in and were founding members of the NFCAA.
Coaching Turmoil[edit | edit source]
Before the kickoff of the game against Middle Tennessee to start the season, SMU had two coaches abruptly resign. Coachy McCoachFace had his contract terminated after the coin toss due to a fit of rage when MTSU won the toss and deferred. His assistant coaches, bewildered, attempted to overcome the unexpected absence of the Head Coach, and nominated Offensive Coordinator Arron Rabe to take over the duties. The Athletic Director, W.T. Door, approved the change on the spot.
The pressure and sudden change in status were too much for Coach Rabe, however, and he abruptly resigned all coaching duties, having a mental breakdown on the sideline and walking out of Gerald J. Ford Stadium mumbling to himself. He has since been offered the job of Head Coach for the Dallas Cowboys after Jerry Jones saw him sleeping on a park bench.
W.T. Door, exasperated at his luck with football coaches, offered the head coaching job to the Defensive Coordinator, Aahmek Abdur-Rahim, who declined, stating "Nah, man, I just want to coach the D." At a loss for options, Door finally turned to the special teams coordinator, Earl "Squishy" Wilson who quit on the spot in a fit of rage at being passed over twice for the job.
Finally, having been unsuccessful at finding at suitable replacement on the current staff, Door entered the stands to find "someone, anyone, who could coach this team," as he stated at the post-game press conference. Luckily for him, and for SMU, former Madden NFL Running Back and NBA2k PG LaPrince Frye was in attendance, because his twin sons, both freshmen, had committed under Coach McCoachFace. Recognizing him, Door offered him the job, to which Coach Frye responded "sure, why not."
The turmoil continued as volatile ref AJ Preller, who had previously resigned temporarily from the Officials Association, refused to continue the game with Coach Frye on the sideline of SMU, saying that he "lost [his] muse" in a statement to Warlotte Childer after the game. Babatunde Oladotun, the Head Coach of Arizona and a member of the Association in good standing, stepped in to complete the game.
Play Style[edit | edit source]
Coach Frye is known to vastly prefer a two-HB, triple option attack, the offense he set records in at Michigan State before heading to his productive Madden career. His twin sons both play HB as well, so the two-HB approach allows him to provide his sons equal playing time and a starter's role with the team. The offense, to this point, has not been productive and there are rumors that Coach Frye may bring in former Madden teammate John Fitzgerald to run that side of the ball.
On defense, Coach Frye has so far left the play calls to Coach Abdur-Rahim. He prefers the 3-4 system, and his astute game management led to the first shutout in NFCAA history against MTSU. Through two games, the SMU defense has allowed only 21 points (7 points against Baylor were on a Kickoff Return). Coach Abdur-Rahim is quickly gaining renown and there are rumors that he may be in line for a head coaching job after the season.
The Special Teams so far have been, to be frank, a complete and utter disappointment. Some of this may be due to Coach Frye's penchant for keeping two Punt Returners back-- primarily his twin sons-- in order to better be able to attempt trick plays and Haywood "The Boot" Soria's boom or bust kicking style.
