Season I was the 1st season of Fake College Football on Reddit organized by the National Fake Collegiate Athletic Association (NFCAA) at its highest level of competition, the Fake Football Bowl Subdivision (FFBS). The regular season began on January 9, 2018, and ended on November 4, 2018. The postseason began on October 9, and ended on November 4, with the College Football Playoff National Championship at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The Marshall Thundering Herd won their first national championship by defeating the Missouri Tigers, 34-31 in 3OT.
For a deep dive into the creation of FCFB, visit The Game That Almost Never Was for a written breakdown, and FCFB Podcast: Episode 3 for an auditory breakdown.
FCFB is a Reddit-based college football game where you guess a number between 1-1500 and the difference between your number and you opponent's number determines what happens on the play. For example, if you're on offense and you guess 69 and your opponent calls 69 as well, that's a difference of 0 and a touchdown for you since you're on offense. The name of the game is to be as close to your opponent's number on offense and as far from your opponent's number on defense. The range is between 0-750, even though we guess between 1-1500. The numbers wrap around, so if you guess 1450 and your opponent guess 1, then that's a difference of 51.
There were 130 teams in the FFBS during Season I, organized into 10 conferences and 4 Independent teams. The playoffs consisted of the top 8 teams selected by the FFBS Playoff Committee, while the New Year's 6 bowls were de facto separate from the playoffs and consisted of the 10 conference champions (or the next best team if a conference champion made the playoffs) and 2 at-large teams. The remaining bowl matchups were selected by the organizer of each bowl in a draft system, adhering to their bowl's tie-ins.
