Season I CFP National Championship[edit | edit source]
The Season I College Football Playoff National Championship was a college football bowl game that determined a national champion in the NFCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision for the inaugural season of FCFB and the NFCAA. It was played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX on FSPN. This was the culminating game of the FBS Season I postseason. The championship featured the #1 seed Missouri Tigers from the Southeastern Conference losing to the #7 seed Marshall Thundering Herd from the Conference USA by a score of 34–31 in 3OT. The win gave Marshall their first national championship. Missouri, for their part, appeared in their first overall CFP National Championship game.
This was the very first national championship and was retroactively named "National Championship I" as opposed to "National Championship" with the announcement of the rebranding of the National Championship game during season III, changing everything from a specific year to a specific season (i.e. this is season I), and giving National Championship games logos based on their host instead of "cookie cutter" logos.
