Season II CFP National Championship Game[edit | edit source]
The Season II College Football Playoff National Championship was a college football bowl game that determined a national champion in the NFCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision for Season II of FCFB and the NFCAA. It was played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA on FSPN. This was the culminating game of the Season II bowl season. The championship featured the sixth seeded Western Kentucky Hilltoppers from Conference USA defeating the fifth seed UMass Minutemen, an Independent team, by a score of 38–7. The win gave Western Kentucky their first national championship. UMass, for their part, appeared in their first overall CFP National Championship game.
This was the second National Championship and was retroactively named "National Championship II" as opposed to "National Championship" with the announcement of the rebranding of the National Championship game during season III, changing everything from a specific year to a specific season (i.e. this is season I), and giving National Championship games logos based on their host instead of "cookie cutter" logos.
